Glasair Super-II FT N59CL

Feb01, 1 hours -  Continued shaping wing top.

Feb01, 4 hours - Laid in left flap spar laminates.  Inspected the new parts: Cowling, extended wingtips, GIII oil filter ducting, and fiberglass engine baffle.  Along with the mount I received last week, I now have all of the required factory parts save the spinner.

Feb01, 1 hour - Prepped for closing of left flap.  Drilled internal drain hole, cleaned & sanded all bonding surfaces, reread manual & inspected flap for completeness.

Feb01, 1 hour - Closed left flap.

Feb01, 5 hours - Prepped for closing of right flap.  Re-reading the manual, I discovered that I neglected to drill the drain hole at the actuator rib for the left flap.  Fortunately this can be done from the outside, and I've marked the flap as a reminder.  After a few more trial fits and a final inspection, closed the right flap.

Feb01, 2 hours - Inspected both flaps with ailerons installed.  Straight as an arrow!  The trials with the trailing edge boards were worth it.  Bonded the flap leading edges outboard of the end brackets, and began filling the leading edge joggle.

Feb01, 7 hours - Finished leading edge filling.  Continued wingtop shaping.

Feb01, 4 hours - More wing shaping.  Finished filling right top skin over the spar.  Maximum thickness appears to be about .020, most is less than .010.

Feb01, 1.5 hours - Shaped flap hinge cutouts, sanded outboard ends for 3/16" gap before cap.

Feb01, 4 hours - Fabricated & installed outboard flap and inboard aileron caps.  The flap caps were precut & finished for the hinge bolt holes.  The holes will be filled with RTV prior to flight.  In order to get an even gap, I installed a 1/8" masonite shim between the caps while they cured.

Feb01, 6 hours - Continued wing top finishing.  The q-cell on the leading edge still had not set up.  Followed Neal Garvin's advice of hitting it with a heat gun.  This did the trick in just a few minutes, allowing me to start finish shaping the leading edge.

Feb01, 3 hours - Prepped the flaps as male molds for the rear wing cap at the slotted flaps.  Laid up the left cap.

February 2001 – 39.5 hours
